"Immersive Virtual Training System Enhances Firefighters' Emergency Response Capabilities

Digital Twin Firefighting Training

Reporter Kim Jun-ho

Daejeon Metropolitan City announced on the 26th that it has secured three intellectual property rights (copyrights) for its digital twin-based immersive firefighting training content, the first of its kind in Korea.

The newly registered intellectual property rights cover three versions of the training content designed for different user groups: fire safety managers, firefighters, and the general public.

Developed since 2023 in collaboration with the Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation (LX) and WAVUS, the content utilizes digital twin technology to accurately replicate real-world environments in a virtual space.

According to city officials, the system transforms conventional fire safety tabletop exercises based on two-dimensional (2D) floor plans into immersive virtual reality (VR)-based training. Feedback from firefighters was actively incorporated to enhance realism and improve training effectiveness.

The training platform allows up to 20 participants to connect simultaneously and operate in four-person teams. Designed within three-dimensional (3D) modeled buildings, it enables repeated practice of firefighting and rescue operations under various scenarios, helping improve firefighters' emergency response capabilities.

The 3D-modeled training facilities include major public venues frequently visited by citizens, such as Shinsegae Department Store, Hotel Onoma, Wolpyeong Library, Lee Ungno Museum of Art, Pyeongsong Youth Cultural Center, Daejeon Museum of Art, Yeonjeong Korean Traditional Music Center, and Hanbat Arboretum.

The content attracted significant attention at the Government Innovation Expo held in November last year, where it was ranked as the most popular exhibition booth among 130 participating booths.

A Daejeon City official said, ""We will continue to promote administrative innovation through advanced technologies such as digital twins to improve citizens' quality of life and strengthen the city's competitiveness."""
