WAVUS Consortium Wins Contract to Build ESS Performance Evaluation System for Korea Electrical Safety Corporation

"[Edaily Reporter Park Jung-soo] WAVUS (336060), a digital twin technology company, announced on the 25th that it has won a contract for the “Development of a Digital Twin-Based ESS Performance Evaluation System” project, valued at approximately KRW 4.8 billion, through a consortium with Daegeon Soft, AINS S&C, and Spatialty. The project was commissioned by the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation (KESCO).

This project is part of a national safety infrastructure initiative aimed at ensuring the safety and reliability of Energy Storage Systems (ESS), which are essential for achieving Korea’s 2050 carbon neutrality goals, while also addressing public concerns arising from ESS-related fire incidents. The consortium began system development activities earlier this month.

 

With the rapid expansion of renewable energy infrastructure in recent years, the deployment of ESS facilities has increased significantly, bringing greater attention to ESS safety issues. Conventional ESS performance evaluations require lengthy demonstration and operational testing periods, resulting in substantial time and cost burdens. As a result, the need for a new framework capable of evaluating ESS performance and lifespan in a faster, more objective, and more reliable manner has continued to grow.

 

Leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twin technologies, the WAVUS consortium will establish an integrated control and performance evaluation process for ESS demonstration facilities at the KESCO ESS Safety Evaluation Center.

 

Specifically, the consortium will utilize digital twin technology to create virtual representations of various ESS facilities within the ESS Safety Evaluation Center, as well as integrated power generation environments involving solar power systems and hydrogen fuel cells. The project will also support virtual modeling of ESS testing facilities. In addition, an AI-based accelerated degradation testing system will be developed and applied to ESS lifespan evaluation and risk prediction.

 

The consortium will also establish an integrated monitoring system capable of collecting and analyzing real-time data from the Center and more than ten external ESS testing sites while continuously diagnosing ESS operating conditions. The resulting data, combined with AI-based simulation outcomes, will be used to develop objective and highly reliable standard models for ESS performance evaluation.

 

The project is expected to generate significant benefits for the nation, industry, and the public. From a policy perspective, it will help secure ESS safety, alleviate public concerns, and provide a stable foundation for expanding renewable energy adoption and advancing carbon-neutral energy transition policies. From an industrial perspective, it will provide domestic ESS manufacturers with an advanced R&D testbed for rapid and accurate product verification, thereby strengthening the global competitiveness of Korea’s ESS industry. For the public, the project is expected to promote the deployment of safety-verified ESS solutions, improve confidence in the overall energy system, and contribute to a more stable and reliable electricity supply.

 

In particular, this project demonstrates that the WAVUS consortium’s digital twin technology has evolved beyond simple data visualization and monitoring. By synchronizing physical facilities and virtual systems in real time, the platform enables AI-driven analysis and decision-making capabilities. The company expects that this achievement will also create opportunities to expand into emerging industries such as digital twin-based AI factories and Physical AI, which have recently gained momentum following discussions at the APEC Summit.
